Elderly Woman Allegedly Assaulted by Police While Trying to Protect Son-in-law

Matugama, Sri Lanka – September 10, 2023: In a shocking incident that unfolded on the evening of September 7, 2023, a 65-year-old woman named Kusumavati, residing in Karanpatara Navuttuduwa, Matugama, was allegedly assaulted by police officers while attempting to protect her son-in-law, Asanka Suresh, aged 27, from being taken into custody.

According to reports, Asanka Suresh, who works in a nearby tea estate, was on his way home from work when he was apprehended by two police inspectors, Chandima and Sadaruwan, both from the Matugama police force. Asanka reportedly shouted for them not to take him away, which drew the attention of his family members.

Kusumavati, along with her children, rushed to the scene upon hearing Asanka’s cries. In an attempt to prevent the police from taking her son-in-law, Kusumavati clung to one of the officers, Inspector Charminda, pleading with him not to harm Asanka. In response, Asanka managed to break free and flee from the scene.

However, the situation took a distressing turn as Inspector Charminda allegedly punched Kusumavati in the face and struck her ear. The assault left her in severe pain, with chest tightness and feeling faint. Concerned family members rushed Kusumavati to Kalutara Nagoda Hospital for medical attention. She was subsequently admitted to ward number two for residential treatment and received care until September 8, 2023.

The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, with residents demanding an investigation into the alleged police misconduct. The Matugama police department has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.

As this story unfolds, it raises questions about the use of force by law enforcement officers and the need for transparency and accountability in such cases. Local authorities are expected to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident, and concerned citizens are calling for justice for Kusumavati and her family.
